
Richard F. Spaide, MD, is a retinal-disease specialist whose academic output includes more than 400 peer-reviewed articles, over 50 book chapters, and several edited books. He graduated from Muhlenberg College and Jefferson Medical College, completed ophthalmology residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center, and trained in retina at Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital. His research spans macular disease, retinal surgery, and ocular imaging, including indocyanine angiography, fundus autofluorescence, central serous chorioretinopathy, macular-hole mechanics, oxidative injury and lipid peroxides in Bruch’s membrane, combined photodynamic therapy and intravitreal triamcinolone for AMD, and new retinal/choroidal imaging methods. Current work includes multimodal imaging, OCT angiography, and computer rendering of retinal anatomy. Awards include the Rosenthal Foundation Award, Prix Soubrane, Retina Society Award of Merit, Henkind, Coscas, Nataraja Pillai, W. Richard Green, George Theodossiadis, ASRS Founders, AAO Life Achievement Honor, Simon Gratz, Roger Johnson, J. Donald Gass, Doyne Medal, and Wacker Prize. He is an ARVO Fellow, serves on journal editorial boards and as an associate editor of Retina, and has ranked in the top 0.01% of scientists by publication impact.
