Irene A. Barbazetto, MD, is a vitreoretinal surgeon and macular-disease specialist who is board certified in both the United States and Europe. She is internationally recognized for treatment of macular degeneration, retinal vascular disease, retinal vein occlusion, hereditary retinal disorders, and diabetic eye disease. Dr. Barbazetto has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, serves on the editorial board of Graefe’s Archive of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award in 2009, and has also received patient-voted honors including Most Compassionate Physician and a 2010 Patient’s Choice Award. A Hamburg University graduate, she completed a cum laude doctoral thesis on a preschool vision-screening test and trained in ophthalmology in Lübeck, where she participated in development of photodynamic therapy for macular degeneration. She later completed research fellowship work with Dr. Stanley Chang at Columbia, general-surgery internship at Lenox Hill Hospital, ophthalmology residency at Columbia, and vitreoretinal fellowship at Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital and Columbia. She investigates national and international clinical trials, pioneered photodynamic therapy for choroidal hemangioma and other ocular tumors, reviews for ophthalmology publications, belongs to ASRS, ARVO, EVER, NYOS, and AAO, and teaches at Columbia and NYU.
