
Dr. Michael Engelbert, MD, PhD
Michael Engelbert, MD, PhD, is a vitreoretinal surgeon and macular-disease specialist who provides medical care for age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease and performs surgery for macular disease, retinal detachment—including complex diabetic, traumatic, or previously failed repairs—and secondary intraocular-lens implantation after complicated cataract surgery. He is internationally recognized for work on vitreous anatomy and vitreoretinal-interface disorders. Dr. Engelbert earned his medical degree magna cum laude from Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, then conducted basic research on endophthalmitis and earned a PhD for that work. He completed internship at Yale-affiliated Griffin Hospital, receiving the Vincent D. DeLuca Award as best medical intern, followed by ophthalmology residency and chief residency at Columbia’s Harkness Eye Institute and vitreoretinal fellowship at Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital and Columbia. He belongs to ASRS, EVRS, ARVO, AAO, and Club Jules Gonin, reviews for leading ophthalmology journals, and received U.S. permanent residency as an “outstanding scientist.” He teaches at NYU and has contributed major advances in vitreous anatomy and imaging, including award-winning swept-source OCT research presented internationally.
